Soul of Hip Hop

The Hip Hop Community.

Spread the love
Hip Hop, in the words of KRS-One, is “something that is being lived.” – KRS One, introduction to Ruminations (New York: Welcome Rain,  2003)

The Soul of Hip Hop cannot be easily understood or defined. It is complex and full of narratives that would blow away many of the strongest anthropologists. Hip Hop is larger than the radio, larger than commercialized artists, larger than record industry branding. It is a culture, a people, a movement, a growing community of people that live, breathe, eat, love, hate, and work just as anyone else does. Here at soulofhiphop.com, we have two main philosophies #EachOneTeachOne and #TogetherWeWillGrow. The phrase “Each one Teach one” originated during the times of slavery when people of color were denied education, including learning to read. Many if not most enslaved people were kept in a state of ignorance about anything beyond their immediate circumstances which were under the control of owners, the lawmakers, and authorities. When an enslaved person learned or was taught to read, it became their duty to teach someone else, spawning the phrase “Each one teach one.” This is why we are building a resource here for the community; to teach and help make it easier for artists and musicians to connect and share their voice with the world… and of course with your help “Together we will Grow” into a stronger, more vibrant, richer community. <3
